Process engineering - where do we stand?
Welcome to the latest edition of the NES Process. You might not know this, but here at NES, our financial year runs from November to October, so currently I am up to my ears in budgets for our new financial year!
As any sensible person would do when asked to produce a sales & profit projection for the next 12 months, my first task was to research the market and get a feel for the market as a whole. Being blessed with ears and eyes, I already had a pretty good idea for which way the wind is blowing when it comes to the UK market of course, but within 30 minutes of scouring online news sources, here is a summary of what I learnt...read more.

New NES management supports global expansion
NES is extending its global chemical engineering and validation presence with the launch of an office in New Jersey, USA and the appointment of new division manager, Ian Moore.

NES resists economic slowdown with Leeds office opening
Despite an overall negative outlook for many UK industries, technical and engineering recruitment firm NES has announced the opening of a new office in Leeds and the appointment of two new members of staff to support the branch – resisting the worldwide economic slowdown.
Thanks to the continued buoyancy of some of the UK’s engineering sectors, David Rigby will be heading the new Leeds division where, as office manager, he will appoint a team of recruitment professionals to help him develop the company’s presence within the region focusing on a range of general engineering sectors...more.
NES examines Dragonfly Consulting Ltd case
The contracting press went into overdrive following the recent High Court decision regarding ‘Dragonfly’ and, as often happens on these occasions, contractors can be confused about the messages that are being sent out.
NES Group commercial director, Stephen Rookes said “to ensure that our own contractors are fully briefed on the impact of the case and the steps that they need to take to reduce any exposure to tax/NIC or penalties, we asked a leading IR35 expert (and ex-HMRC tax inspector) John Hill of John Hill & Associates to provide an overview of the relevant issues and to give practical advice on what our contractors need to consider going forward...read more.

New Jersey beckons for NES process
Based in the Middletown area of Monmouth County, from November 3rd 2008, NES process will have a new presence in New Jersey, USA.
This transition overseas has taken place following an expansion of offerings in the UK to the validation, general engineering, manufacturing & production and project engineering sectors.
The United States is home to half of the world’s pharmaceutical market, so there was virtually no question of whether the expansion into the USA would happen for a company like NES, and with New Jersey and North Eastern USA acting as a technology corridor and hub for the life sciences activity in the country, this new office has been strategically placed to offer a recruitment service of the standard that NES customers have become accustomed to, in an area in which we anticipate considerable demand...read more.

Global Candidate Pipeline update – immigration changes
As you may be aware the Home Office UK Border Agency is in the process of introducing the new points-based system (PBS) resulting in substantial changes to current immigration policies and procedures.
This transition is well underway with the Tier 1 element of the five-tier system already up and running and the new Tier 2 scheduled to be introduced at the end of November 2008. YOUR CAREER: How to increase your earning potential

With the existence of much-publicised skills shortages, it comes as no surprise that the skills of a well-qualified professional are highly sought after. This is why some might find themselves ‘drifting’ somewhat from project to project, with consistency in terms of job offers, and earning an acceptable income with gradual promotional opportunities, but without ever necessarily achieving their maximum earning potential: the difference between having a job and having a career.
Without an accurate appreciation of your employment value and the confidence to apply yourself in order to achieve this, you could find yourself being paid comparably less than other similarly qualified individuals. To make sure you don’t find yourself in this unfavourable position, it is up to you to take full control of your own career and do everything in your power to achieve a salary or rate that is reflective of your capabilities...more.
TOP 10 TIPS...for career management during a recession
1. Expect the worst!
What is the worst case scenario? Think about this and act before it happens. This doesn’t just mean keeping a look out for new work while you still have a job…it means tightening the purse strings if necessary and cutting down on non-essentials wherever possible if you think there is a chance of redundancy. Making a plan of action could help you to remain calm and focused with seeking alternative employment opportunities...read more.
