Qatargas pioneered the liquefied natural gas industry in Qatar. Today, the company is realizing its vision to deliver LNG to customers around the globe from its world-class facilities in Qatar.
Qatargas was established in 1984 and since that time the company has progressively established itself as a leading player in the LNG industry.
The company was originally formed to operate three LNG trains with a design capacity of two million tonnes per annum (mtpa) each. Today Qatargas is exporting 10 million tonnes per annum of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the existing three LNG trains to customers in Japan and Spain.
Currently the company is undergoing a period of rapid expansion, which when completed in 2010 will see 42 million tonnes of LNG per annum exported to markets in Europe, Asia and North America.
Qatargas 2, Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4 will increase the total number of LNG trains to seven from the original three. Laffan Refinery is another major project currently in progress. These and other projects being undertaken as part of the massive expansion has brought in several equity partnership companies involving different ownership interests.
In July 2005, Qatargas Operating Company Limited was formed for the purpose of operating and maintaining the assets of Qatargas 1, Qatargas 2, Qatargas 3, Qatargas 4, Laffan Refinery and other assets on behalf of the shareholders.
Qatar is currently experiencing major growth in all sectors, the most prominent being the Oil & Gas industry. The country currently boasts proven gas reserves of 900-trillion cubic feet in the North Field and has become one of the major exporters of LNG in the world. By 2011, the North Field will be producing some 77 million tons of LNG.
The development of the Oil & Gas industry has had a profound effect on the country as whole. Doha, the capital of Qatar, is now a thriving modern-day city with all the amenities you would expect in such a location and projects are ongoing to further develop the country's entertainment sector.
